In a poignant gesture, the Homa Bay County government has completed a two-bedroom house for Albert Ojwang's father, just ahead of his son's burial. The Homa Bay County government has completed the construction of a two-bedroom house for the family of Albert Ojwang, barely a day before his burial. This swift and compassionate action fulfills a deeply cherished dream of Albert’s, tragically cut short by his untimely death in police custody.
In a heartfelt statement released on Thursday morning, Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga confirmed the completion of the home, emphasizing that Albert Ojwang’s fervent wish to build his parents a modern house had been realized, even in his poignant absence. "Today, as we receive Albert’s body home, his dream to build his parents a new house is fulfilled, albeit in his absence. May justice prevail," Governor Wanga declared, linking the act of compassion directly to the broader demand for accountability surrounding Ojwang's death.
The newly constructed house stands adjacent to Mzee Ojwang's old semi-permanent residence in Kokwanyo village in Kabondo Kasipul, a striking symbol of hope and a son's enduring legacy. The new structure boasts a welcoming aesthetic, painted in a warm beige with crisp white accents along its edges, providing a cheerful and bright appearance, further enhanced by an inviting staircase at the entrance.
Stepping inside, one is greeted by a wide and elegantly appointed sitting room. The walls are adorned in a light cream hue, complementing the comfortable furniture and vibrantly colored curtains that create a cosy and inviting atmosphere. This modern homestead is a stark contrast to the semi-permanent dwelling Meshack Ojwang and his wife had inhabited, holding onto the hope that one day their son would realize his ambition of building them a better life.

The completion of this house comes just two weeks after Governor Wanga publicly pledged to undertake its construction. Her commitment was made during a visit to the grieving family on June 16, where she offered condolences and extended significant support. During that visit, Governor Wanga also delivered a cash donation of Ksh2 million from President William Ruto, demonstrating solidarity from the highest levels of government.
The county boss has also pledged to rally friends and well-wishers to purchase a plot in Homa Bay Town for the construction of rental houses. This forward-thinking initiative aims to establish a continuous income stream for Ojwang’s parents, providing them with long-term financial stability and a measure of comfort in their profound loss.
However, the gesture of goodwill is inextricably linked to the pressing demand for justice. Albert Ojwang's death in police custody, following his arrest by DCI officers in early June, remains a source of deep pain and unanswered questions for his family and the wider community. Governor Wanga’s clear and public call for justice during the house handover underscores the community’s unwavering expectation that those responsible for Albert’s demise be held accountable.
