Dancehall icon Vybz Kartel, whose real name is Adidja Palmer, has returned to the spotlight after a decade behind bars. His release from prison in June 2024, following the overturning of his 2014 murder conviction by UK judges, has ignited excitement among fans and renewed interest in his music and personal life. The 48-year-old artist's recent interview has provided insights into his reflections on incarceration, fatherhood, and his intricate relationships with the mothers of his children. In a candid conversation with Wayne Mitchell on "We Are The Mitchells," Vybz Kartel opened up about various aspects of his life. He discussed his predictions regarding the charges against him, the ongoing debate surrounding the "King of Dancehall" title, and the importance of mental health awareness.
He also shared reflections on his early years as an artist, the lessons learned during his imprisonment, and the joys of grandparenting. Kartel touched on the impact of his experiences on his community and spoke about his relationship with his former partner, Tanesha "Shorty" Johnson. Despite the pain of infidelity during his incarceration, Kartel expressed continued love and respect for Johnson, acknowledging the emotional vulnerability she evoked in him.
Vybz Kartel's complex love life has long been a topic of public fascination. His recent comments about his relationship with Johnson, the mother of three of his children, have created a stir. His admission of being deeply hurt by her actions, coupled with his long-standing relationship with his current fiancée, Sidem Öztürk, has raised questions about the future of his romantic life.
Sidem Öztürk has been a constant source of support for Kartel throughout his legal ordeal. She played a crucial role in managing his career and personal affairs during his imprisonment. The couple, who initially connected through letters exchanged in prison, finally met in person in 2019. In August 2024, they launched a YouTube channel together, "Kiss Me Baby," signaling a new chapter in their relationship. Öztürk has described the emotional challenges of prison visits without physical contact. Her dedication to Kartel is evident in her relocation to Jamaica to be closer to him.
"Let bygones be bygones," were the words repeated by Vybz Kartel during the interview, suggesting a desire to move forward. However, the question remains: Will he rekindle his relationship with Johnson? Will he find lasting peace and stability with Öztürk? The dancehall king's journey is far from over, and his next steps in both his personal and professional life will undoubtedly be closely watched.
Beyond Johnson, Vybz Kartel has several other children with different mothers. He honored Johnson with a 2020 album titled "To Tanesha." Amanda is another of his children's mothers. Dancehall artist Sheba claims Kartel is the father of her son, Nhance. Judith Chariga and MaBoss Tv are also mothers of his children. Prior to these relationships, Vybz Kartel was married to Stacy Elliott, a New York bank supervisor, in 2006. Their marriage ended after two years.
