The ambitious bullet train project connecting Mumbai and Ahmedabad is set to transform travel in India. The bullet train, also known as the "Shinkansen" in Japan, is a high-speed passenger train that operates on a dedicated railway network. It is capable of reaching a top speed of 320 kmph. With construction in India now underway after delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, this evident to the advancements in railway technology in the country.
The project was approved in December 2015 and supported by Japan. Its aim is to establish a 508 km high-speed rail corridor that will drastically reduce travel time to approximately three hours. As of 2024, the first section in Gujarat is expected to open by the end of 2027, with the entire line projected to be operational by 2028.
With a workforce of over 31,000 laborers and 3,350 staff members, Larsen & Toubro (L&T) is at the forefront of this massive infrastructure undertaking and it is responsible for constructing 92% of the corridor which spans 468.24 km from Thane to Ahmedabad. This includes building nine of the twelve stations, seven depots, tunnels, bridges, and laying down 115 km of track. The Ministry of Railways in India has targeted to operationalize the 50-km-long priority corridor by the end of 2026.
The project has a revised cost of ₹1.08 lakh crores and an expenditure of ₹67,486 crore to date with an aim to modernize India's infrastructure and boost its economy. The introduction of bullet trains promises numerous benefits to netizens, such as time efficiency, environmental sustainability, real estate development, economic growth and many more.
