The laughter that once filled Kenyan homes, courtesy of KK Mwenyewe, has given way to profound sorrow. On Monday, July 21, the creative community, political figures, and a multitude of supporters gathered at the Blue Springs Hotel in Nairobi to pay their final respects to the talented comedian, born Zakaria Kariuki, who tragically passed away on July 14, 2025, after a brief illness. The memorial full of grief and solidarity, underscoring the deep affection and respect he commanded as a rising star whose unique comedic genius had endeared him to a nation.
KK Mwenyewe carved a special place in the hearts of Kenyans through his uncanny comedic impersonations, most notably his spot-on mimicry of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. Beyond his ability to evoke widespread laughter, KK was remembered as a dedicated young man, a recently graduated content creator who served as the sole breadwinner for his family, including his elderly grandmother. His untimely death silenced a vibrant comedic voice but also cast a shadow of financial uncertainty over those he tirelessly supported, amplifying the collective sorrow felt across the country.
Leading the fundraising efforts were several Members of Parliament and prominent leaders who stepped forward with substantial contributions to support KK Mwenyewe's family in preparing for his burial, set for Wednesday, July 23. This collective act of compassion underscored the profound impact the young comedian had on public figures and citizens alike, transcending political and social divides in a shared moment of mourning.

A significant highlight of the memorial was the announcement by Dennis Itumbi, Head of Presidential Special Programmes and Creative Economy Coordination, that President William Ruto had personally donated a remarkable Sh1 million to the family. This generous contribution, a testament to the President's compassion and recognition of KK's talent, propelled the fundraising efforts well past its initial Sh1.2 million target, accumulating over Sh1.5 million in total. Further notable contributions poured in from leaders such as Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika (Sh200,000), Itumbi himself (Sh100,000), Lari MP Mburu Kahangara (Sh100,000), and a pledge of Sh100,000 from Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah, showcasing widespread support. Itumbi also pledged to personally convey President Ruto's condolences to KK's mother in Gathiroini, Lari.
The emotional weight of the event was palpable as KK's heartbroken girlfriend, Pauline, bravely offered a few words: "I don't have much to say. I just want to say thank you and may his soul rest in peace," her voice visibly shaky. Fellow content creator Kabugi made a heartfelt plea to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, urging him to support the family of the comedian who had once brought his public persona to national comedic recognition. Comedian Eric Omondi, who had already visited the bereaved family, delivered a passionate call to action, urging fellow entertainers and all Kenyans to continue supporting KK Mwenyewe’s family, emphasizing, "They are not okay. We lost our brother abruptly... We want to stand and mourn with them and, most importantly, support them financially so they can give our brother a decent burial."
