Senator Methu's Convoy Teargassed in Murang'a

A dramatic confrontation unfolded in Murang'a County on Sunday, July 7, as Nyandarua Senator John Methu and allies of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua faced teargas and alleged gunfire from police, forcing them to flee. This incident, marking the second such blockade in as many weekends, raises critical questions about political assembly and the democratic space in Kenya.

The delicate balance of political discourse in Kenya was starkly illustrated on Sunday, July 7, when a planned series of public rallies in Murang'a County dramatically escalated into a confrontation involving law enforcement. Nyandarua Senator John Methu, a prominent ally of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, along with other leaders, found themselves forced to flee for safety as their convoy was reportedly teargassed and subjected to gunshots by police officers. This incident, which unfolded shortly after the leaders attended a church service in Kigumo Constituency, has sent ripples across the political landscape, sparking widespread concern and debate.
The day began with a solemn church service, after which the leaders intended to address multiple public gatherings in Murang'a County. However, their movement was swiftly halted when police officers mounted a decisive blockade along one of the major highways. Videos and images widely circulated online captured the tense moments as Senator Methu and other opposition figures attempted to negotiate their passage with a commanding officer, who remained adamant that the convoy must turn back. In a moment that encapsulated the frustration of the leaders, Methu could be heard questioning the officer directly, enquiring, "What have we done? What is the problem with addressing the people?"

The situation rapidly escalated into disarray when a teargas canister was reportedly hurled directly at Senator Methu during his engagement with the police officer, prompting the Senator and his allies to hastily flee the scene. Further complicating the narrative, unconfirmed reports have emerged suggesting that Methu's convoy was also subjected to attacks by unnamed individuals, believed by some to be hired goons. A statement released by Gachagua's team detailed these allegations: "Armed Police officers accompanied by goons have ambushed Leaders allied to DCP Leader Rigathi Gachagua immediately after they left AIPCA Christ The King Church in Kahuro, Kigumo Constituency, Murang'a County." The statement further claimed, "The Police, jointly with goons, blocked the leader's convoy and started throwing teargas and live bullets. They dispersed the crowds and harassed the leaders, saying that they were not allowed to hold a meeting in the area." The aftermath of the fracas left several individuals nursing injuries, and vehicles within Methu's convoy sustained damage, including visible signs consistent with bullet impact.
Notably, this incident was not an isolated event for Senator Methu and Gachagua's allies. It marked the second consecutive weekend their movements had been curtailed by law enforcement. Just a week prior, on July 20, police had established a significant roadblock along the Nakuru-Nyahururu highway, specifically heading towards Subukia town. This action followed intelligence that Gachagua's allies were planning to conduct rallies in Nakuru Town. Prior to that roadblock drama, the leaders had attended a church service at the Subukia AIC, where they reportedly launched "another tirade" against the Kenya Kwanza government.
