Transforming air travel in East Africa, Oman’s low-cost airline, SalamAir, has officially launched its inaugural flight from Muscat to Nairobi. This momentous occasion took place on March 17, 2025, at the bustling Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, marking a significant leap in SalamAir’s ambitious expansion into the African continent. This new Muscat-Nairobi route enhances connectivity between Oman and Kenya, opening a treasure trove of opportunities for business, tourism, and cultural exchange.
SalamAir's entry into the Nairobi route is a pivotal addition, showcasing their commitment to improving regional connectivity. Adrian Hamilton-Manns, the CEO of SalamAir, expressed enthusiasm, stating, "We are thrilled to expand our network by introducing flights between Muscat and Nairobi. This new route supports our vision to connect Oman to key global destinations, strengthening economic and cultural ties in alignment with Oman Vision 2040." This vision is deeply intertwined with fostering economic progress and cultural engagements that enhance both nations’ ties. SalamAir will operate three flights weekly, using Airbus A320neo aircraft, with a flight time of approximately five hours.
The launch represents the beginning of meaningful relations between the two countries. It signals Oman’s pivot towards new horizons in Africa, with Nairobi serving as the perfect gateway. Omani travelers now have access to East Africa’s rich culture and biodiversity, while Kenyan travelers can easily explore Oman’s stunning desert landscapes, traditional souks, and burgeoning culinary scene.
The inaugural flight ceremony drew notable dignitaries, signaling the importance of this new route. Under the patronage of Mohamed Daghar, Principal Secretary of the State Department for Transport in Kenya’s Ministry of Roads and Transport, as well as Her Excellency Nasra Salim Mohamed Al Hashmi, the Omani Ambassador to Kenya, and His Excellency Abdi Aden Korio, the Kenyan Ambassador to Oman, the event was marked by speeches celebrating this thriving partnership.
Her Excellency Nasra Salim Mohamed Al Hashmi articulated the broader implications of this new route: “The commencement of SalamAir’s direct flight to Nairobi marks a significant development in the relationship between the Sultanate of Oman and the Republic of Kenya. This route is expected to boost trade, tourism, and investment, further strengthening economic ties.” Her words encapsulate the essence of the relationship, which is more than just flights, but about enhancing bilateral solidarity.
Nairobi, a city bustling with life, renowned for its vast savannas, dynamic urban culture, and as a gateway to Africa’s iconic wildlife reserves, becomes more accessible with SalamAir’s new route. Travelers can venture into Kenya’s stunning landscapes, from the majestic Maasai Mara to the picturesque Lake Nakuru. The vibrant atmosphere of Nairobi, with its art, music, and diverse cuisine, is now within closer reach.
Tourism experts predict a significant uptick in visitors eager to experience Kenya’s natural beauty and diverse wildlife. Omani tourists can also dive into Kenya’s rich heritage and experience Kenyan hospitality. From breathtaking national parks to bustling markets, the possibilities for enriching travel experiences are numerous. The new route also opens up cargo opportunities, allowing for increased trade in fresh produce and other goods between the two nations.
Beyond tourism, SalamAir’s route to Nairobi is a boon for the business community. Kenya, an economic powerhouse in East Africa, offers opportunities for investment and commercial partnerships. With direct linkage to Muscat, entrepreneurial ventures expand dramatically. Kenyan businesses can tap into the Gulf market, and Omani entrepreneurs will find a burgeoning landscape filled with potential.
His Excellency Abdi Aden Korio echoed these sentiments, welcoming the airline's entry into the Kenyan market. "This route serves as a crucial connection for travelers within the tourism sector, business community, and government officials. Kenya welcomes SalamAir with open arms and looks forward to the continuation of this vital passenger and cargo service.” With such collaboration, the potential for economic growth through trade and investment is boundless.
Cultural exchange is a huge aspect of this newfound connectivity. More than just travel, it’s about fostering deeper understanding and connections between the people of Oman and Kenya. Shared experiences, culinary delights, and rich histories pave the way for friendships and partnerships that transcend geographical boundaries. SalamAir has indicated that Nairobi is just the beginning, with plans to expand further into East Africa. Future routes and partnerships are being explored.
