President William Ruto hosted the Harambee Stars players at State House, Nairobi, to celebrate their impressive run in the African Nations Championship (CHAN) tournament. Despite their elimination in the quarterfinals, the team's spirited campaign and determination captured the admiration of many Kenyans, prompting the President to recognize their efforts with a significant gesture of goodwill.
The highlight of the event was President Ruto's announcement of a generous reward for the players. As a gesture of support, the government is allowing each player to purchase a two-bedroom house at half the market price. The President confirmed that the government will cover half of the KSh 2 million cost for each house, paying KSh 1 million per player. This unprecedented move is a major incentive for the team and a testament to the government's commitment to athlete welfare.

During the luncheon, the team’s captain expressed gratitude for the unwavering support from the government and the Kenyan nation, saying the team felt "untouchable" on the field thanks to the fans' support. One of the players also took the opportunity to apologize for not winning the tournament, promising to perform better in the future. The President's gift is a clear signal that the government values their efforts regardless of the final outcome.
In a further show of recognition, a player was honored for his exceptional performance during the tournament. Boniface Muchiri was promoted from the rank of senior private to a higher role by the Kenya Defence Forces. This dual recognition—from the President and the KDF—highlights the importance of celebrating excellence in all its forms.
Looking ahead, the team's focus now shifts to the AFCON 2027 qualifiers, with thorough preparations set to begin immediately. The President’s gifts of housing and financial support serve as a powerful motivation as the team sets its sights on future victories. With the government and the nation behind them, the Harambee Stars are ready to build on their success and make Kenya proud.
