In a firm declaration in public service, the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has announced the immediate dismissal of its Vice Chairperson, Wambui Nyutu. The decision, formally communicated by NCIC Chairperson Rev. Dr. Samuel Kobia following a Special Commission Meeting on July 22, 2025, cites Nyutu’s persistent involvement in partisan political activities as a direct violation of her oath of office and statutory duties. This move by the NCIC sends an unequivocal message about accountability within institutions tasked with fostering national unity.
The NCIC's core mandate is to promote peace, cohesion, and integration across Kenya. For such a vital body, its commissioners must remain strictly apolitical, ensuring their credibility and effectiveness are never compromised by partisan affiliations. Rev. Dr. Kobia's statement highlighted that Ms. Nyutu’s conduct had become "untenable" and fundamentally incompatible with her constitutional and statutory obligations. The unanimous resolution by the Commission to relieve her of the Vice Chairperson role underscores the seriousness with which these violations are being treated, asserting the non-negotiable principle of impartiality at the heart of the NCIC's operations.
Nyutu's political engagements had reportedly been under scrutiny since early this year, indicating a pattern of conduct deemed inconsistent with her role. The Commission had previously convened three Special Meetings – on January 3, January 23, and February 6 – specifically to address her public remarks and appearances, which were perceived as overtly politically partisan. While Ms. Nyutu initially denied these allegations, the NCIC noted that she later offered an apology and made a formal commitment to refrain from political activity. However, this promise, according to the Commission, proved to be short-lived.
The decisive factor in her dismissal was her continued involvement in partisan political activities, including confirmed participation in meetings affiliated with a specific political party, observed even after her commitment. As Rev. Kobia emphasized, "These actions constitute continued engagement in partisan politics, in contravention of her commitment to the Commission and in breach of the expectations of impartiality required of all Commissioners." The NCIC has now escalated its response, triggering the formal process to remove her entirely from her role as a Commissioner, invoking Section 23 of the National Cohesion and Integration Act (CAP 7N) and "other relevant constitutional mechanisms." The Commission is set to formally notify the relevant appointing authority regarding this final step.
In a swift and decisive transition aimed at ensuring the NCIC's operational continuity, the Commission unanimously elected Dr. Dorcas Kedogo as the new Vice Chairperson, effective immediately. This immediate appointment reflects the NCIC’s unwavering commitment to its mandate and its determination to uphold the highest standards of impartiality.
