Freemason Temple

Here in Nairobi, the usually hushed and perhaps slightly mysterious world of the Freemasons has collided with the very real and very public world of city council revenue. The Nairobi County Government, in a no-nonsense move that's got the city buzzing, has clamped down on the Grand Lodge of East Africa’s Freemasons’ Hall, right in the heart of the city centre. The reason? A cool Ksh.19 million (that's a hefty chunk of change!) in unpaid land rates.
This wasn't some clandestine operation under the cover of darkness, mind you. The enforcement was led by none other than Health CEC Suzanne Silantoi, alongside other high-ranking county officials. It's all part of a larger, very public campaign to crack down on rate defaulters across the Kenyan capital.
"This particular premises owes Nairobi County over Ksh.19 million in land rate arrears," stated CEC Silantoi matter-of-factly. And they're not playing around! "We will not only be clamping properties belonging to defaulters, but we are also moving to disconnect services such as water and sewer lines where necessary.” Ouch! That's hitting where it hurts.
According to the county, this action against the Freemasons' Hall wasn't a sudden decision. They followed what they say was due process, including issuing demand notices and even publishing public warnings in the local dailies, instructing landowners to settle their outstanding dues.

"Before any clamping is done, we issue demand notices and publish the same in local dailies instructing landowners to settle outstanding rates," Silantoi explained. "Failure to comply gives us the legal mandate to clamp." So, it seems the city wasn't exactly keeping this a secret.
Chief Officer Lydia Mathia weighed in, acknowledging that while clamping might inconvenience tenants (if there are any in that particular building), the law allows the county to disconnect essential services for property owners who aren't playing by the rules.
“Disconnection of such services is within the law,” Mathia asserted. “If you can’t pay land rates, how do you expect to benefit from county services? It is unfortunate that tenants may suffer due to their landlords’ negligence.” It paints a stark picture of the city's determination to recover what it's owed.
The scale of the problem is quite significant. Apparently, out of roughly 256,000 registered land parcels in Nairobi, only a mere 50,000 are currently up to date with their land rates. That's a compliance rate of just 20 percent! No wonder the county is taking such firm action. They reportedly stand to recover a whopping Ksh.10 billion in unpaid land rates if they can get more property owners to cough up. The strategy moving forward? Marked buildings, clamped properties, and notices to tenants potentially redirecting rent to the county's revenue account until the debts are cleared.
Speaking of Secret Societies: Let's Talk Freemasons vs. the Illuminati!
Now, this whole Freemason story might have some of you thinking about other secretive groups, specifically the infamous Illuminati. For years, the two have been intertwined in conspiracy theories, but what's the real difference? Let's shed some light on these often-confused organizations.
The main distinction boils down to history, structure, purpose, and the level of actual (versus perceived) secrecy.
Freemasonry: The Fraternal Order
History: Freemasonry boasts a long and well-documented history, tracing its roots back to the guilds of medieval stonemasons. Over time, it evolved into a fraternal organization centered on moral development and community service. Think less shadowy world domination and more helping your fellow "brother."
Structure: It's a globally established and organized system, complete with local lodges, grand lodges, and specific rituals, including symbolic degree ceremonies. There's a clear hierarchy and a well-defined way of doing things.
Purpose: The core emphasis of Freemasonry lies in ethical leadership, the promotion of unity among its members (regardless of background), and the betterment of society through charitable work and personal conduct. They often engage in philanthropic activities and encourage members to live moral lives.
Secrecy: Yes, there is a degree of secrecy within Freemasonry, but it primarily revolves around keeping certain rituals, modes of recognition (like handshakes), and some internal proceedings confidential. This secrecy is more about building trust and a unique bond among members than concealing nefarious goals. Their existence and general aims are not secret.
Membership: Freemasonry is generally open to adult men who believe in a supreme being and are willing to live by moral and ethical principles.
The Illuminati: The Conspiracy Darling
In contrast, the Illuminati, at least the historical one, was a more specific and relatively short-lived group. The modern "Illuminati" of conspiracy theories is a different beast altogether.
History: The original Bavarian Illuminati was an Enlightenment-era secret society founded in 1776. Its aims were largely intellectual and political, advocating for reason and opposing superstition and religious influence in public life. It was relatively short-lived and was eventually suppressed.
Structure: The historical Illuminati had a specific, hierarchical structure, but it was not the sprawling, global organization often depicted in modern conspiracy theories.
Purpose: The historical group's aims were rooted in Enlightenment ideals. The modern, fictionalized Illuminati is often portrayed as a shadowy cabal seeking to control the world.
Secrecy: The historical Illuminati was indeed secretive about its membership and activities. The modern, theoretical Illuminati is characterized by extreme secrecy and manipulation on a global scale.
Membership: The historical group had specific criteria for membership, largely based on intellect and social standing. The modern, fictionalized versions often include powerful figures from various fields.
The Bottom Line: While both involve a degree of "secrecy," the Freemasons are a well-established fraternal organization focused on ethical principles and community, while the Illuminati, especially in popular culture, is largely a concept fueling elaborate conspiracy theories about a hidden hand controlling the world.
So, back to Nairobi! It seems the Freemasons, despite their long history and focus on ethical principles, aren't immune to the mundane realities of land rates. Whether they'll settle their Ksh.19 million bill remains to be seen, but Nairobi City Hall is clearly playing hardball. It's a fascinating clash of a long-standing society and the demands of modern urban governance. Who will blink first? We'll be watching this space!
