In a city constantly striving for a cleaner, more organized urban environment, a new and unsettling threat has emerged. In Nairobi's Central Business District (CBD), the newly installed dustbins, a crucial part of an initiative to keep the capital clean, are being stolen. The unsettling trend was brought to light by Geoffrey Mosiria, the Chief Officer of Environment, who took to social media to express his concern and announce a unique reward scheme to combat the thefts.
In a tweet on Tuesday, August 26, Mosiria linked the theft to scrap metal yards, a recurring issue that has plagued public infrastructure in Kenya for years. He stated that it was "unfortunate" that the bins were being stolen by individuals believed to be associated with these yards, and he vowed to take firm action against those involved. The theft of public property, especially that which is meant to improve the lives of residents, is not just a crime; it is an act of sabotage against the city's progress.

To curb the stealing, Mosiria has taken a bold and unconventional approach: he has announced a reward for anyone who helps catch the culprits. In a move that empowers the public to become guardians of their city, he has promised a reward of KSh 5,000 to any person who arrests or catches someone stealing a litter bin. The reward is even higher for those who can identify a scrap metal dealer in possession of the stolen dustbins, with a bounty of KSh 10,000.
This reward scheme is a crucial part of the city's strategy to protect the investment made by Governor Johnson Sakaja's administration to keep the capital clean. Mosiria believes this is "the only way we can stop these petty thieves and protect the investments made to keep our city clean." He is urging members of the public to assist, calling on them to work together to safeguard the city's cleanliness and public resources.
