Remember those school days when an impending visit from another institution for games or musicals meant a strict dress code and a firm reminder to display impeccable manners? Kenyan citizens are being asked to channel that same spirit of national pride and hospitality as the country prepares to co-host the highly anticipated 2025 Africa Nations Championship (CHAN). With matches set to begin on August 3, 2025, Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has issued a heartfelt appeal, urging Kenyans to be on their "best behaviour" during this momentous continental football showpiece.
Kenya will share hosting duties with neighboring Tanzania and Uganda, welcoming national football teams from across the African continent. CS Murkomen sees this as an unparalleled opportunity for the nation to shine, presenting its renowned hospitable side to the world rather than allowing any negative traits to surface. He underscored this point with a relatable analogy: “Let’s be at our best behaviour because we are having visitors around. Even in any family, they say that when visitors come at home, you must be at your best behaviour. Let’s ensure that this time round, we ensure that our visitors feel at home.”
Beyond the confines of the stadiums, the CS further encouraged Kenyans to extend unwavering courtesy to the thousands of foreign fans expected to flock to the country to cheer on their respective national teams. He emphasized the importance of providing assistance to these visitors, many of whom will be navigating unfamiliar streets and seeking directions or recommendations for places to explore. “I want to ask Kenyans to also be very courteous to our visitors. Many people will be in town and they will miss directions to where they are going. They will want to know where they need to go and best places to visit in Kenya. Please let’s be courteous to our visitors,” he urged.
This call to action from a senior government official is a strategic appeal to leverage a major international event for national brand-building. By embracing this role as gracious hosts, Kenyans have the unique chance to leave a lasting positive impression, solidifying the nation's reputation as a welcoming and capable destination for future global events.
