Howard University is about to make history as its 157th Commencement ceremony celebrates its largest graduating class ever – a whopping 3,160 bright minds ready to take on the world! But within this impressive number lie individual stories of perseverance and triumph that will truly resonate, proving that the pursuit of knowledge knows no age limit and ambition can ignite at any stage of life.
Leading the charge of inspiring graduates is Cheryl Hawkins, a name that deserves a standing ovation. At the remarkable age of 72, Cheryl will proudly walk across that stage to receive her Ph.D. in History. Her journey is a powerful testament to the fact that it's never too late to chase your dreams. Cheryl openly shared her experience as a teenage mom, a path that, while filled with love, meant her academic aspirations had to take a backseat for a time. "This was a long-term goal, and to reach it at this stage in my life. It's kind of special," Cheryl shared with 7News, her words echoing with the weight of a lifelong ambition realized. Her life experience has also gifted her with a valuable perspective, adding, "I think a little bit more about things before I make decisions about them." Cheryl's story is a beacon of hope for anyone who feels their educational goals have been delayed by life's unexpected turns.
But the inspiring narratives don't stop there. Adding a vibrant contrast to Cheryl's journey are some of Howard's youngest graduating Bisons, who will also be crossing the stage this weekend – all at the impressive age of just 19! Among them is the incredibly bright Joyce Sob, who embarked on her college journey at the tender age of 15. Joyce candidly admitted that navigating college classrooms as a young teenager was "nerve-wrecking," often finding herself as the youngest in the room. "I think my mom definitely understood the magnitude of it more than I did," Joyce reflected, highlighting the unwavering support system that helped her navigate this accelerated path.
What's truly remarkable about Joyce's experience is how quickly her age became a non-factor amongst her peers. "Your age isn't something that comes up on the regular in class. So you kind of forget that you are a little younger than some of your peers," she shared with 7News, showcasing the welcoming and inclusive environment fostered at Howard. This speaks volumes about the university's ability to create a space where talent and ambition are celebrated, regardless of age. And Joyce's ambition is certainly soaring – she's expected to begin medical school at Howard in July, with her sights set on becoming an Oncologist, a field where her sharp intellect and compassionate heart will undoubtedly make a significant impact.
Connecting these two inspiring ends of the age spectrum, Cheryl Hawkins offered some profound words of wisdom for the younger graduates, emphasizing the enduring importance of education. "I know sometimes life won't let you go at it right away. I'm a good example of that, but keep it in your heart and your spirit to do it. Education is our key," she passionately stated. Her words carry the weight of experience, a gentle reminder that the pursuit of knowledge, whenever it begins, is a transformative power. "Once you know something, you cannot unknow it. So we need to learn all we can about life ourselves and what talents we came here to share with the world," Cheryl wisely added, encouraging the graduating class to embrace lifelong learning and to use their education to contribute their unique gifts to the world.
Howard University's 157th Commencement ceremony isn't just a celebration of academic achievement; it's a powerful testament to the diverse journeys, unwavering resilience, and boundless potential within its student body. From Cheryl Hawkins's inspiring perseverance over decades to Joyce Sob's remarkable early academic success, these graduates embody the spirit of Howard and the transformative power of education at any age. As the largest graduating class in the university's history prepares to embark on their next chapters, their stories serve as a beacon of hope and inspiration for us all, reminding us that the pursuit of knowledge and the realization of our dreams are lifelong endeavors. Congratulations to the incredible Class of 2025 – the world awaits your brilliance!
