Graduates Opt for Global Destinations in Higher Education

February 7, 2025
The Voronoi app has revealed a graphic that visualizes the top 20 most attractive countries for university graduates over various periods from 2010 to 2023 ranked by The Economist’s Footloose index. This index is derived from the Gallup World Poll which surveys 150,000 individuals globally and focuses on those who have completed an undergraduate degree and their desires to move abroad.
Canada has emerged as a consistent favorite ranking between first and third as the most desirable destination for graduates throughout the years. The Economist estimates that approximately 17 million graduates would choose to relocate to Canada if given the chance. This outcome produces a net gain of about 15 million graduates after considering the possibility of Canadian emigration.
Australia, however, is projected to attract nearly 9 million new graduates, while the United States has the potential to bring in a larger talent pool of 21 million. Despite producing this total of graduates, the U.S. experiences a net gain of only 5 million when considering the potential emigration of 16 million. The analysis also reveals that Canada strongly attracts Mexican graduates while Australia and the U.S. attract a significant number of Chinese workers. Canada seems to be attractive due to its many pathways for newcomers and a reputation for being welcoming and inclusive.
Variations in standings are observed when examining per graduate rankings. For instance, Portugal has made a remarkable leap in its ranking moving from 24th place in 2010 to 13th in 2023. This is because Portugal offers quality education, EU connections and increased number of programmes offered in English. This makes it a study destination worth considering.
