Gachagua Dismisses Raila's 'Conclave,' Points to 2027 as Kenya's True Path

As Kenya grapples with economic hardships, a sharp political debate emerges: Is national dialogue the answer, or is the 2027 ballot box the ultimate solution? Former DP Rigathi Gachagua dismisses Raila Odinga's 'national conclave' proposal, arguing that past talks have yielded no real solutions, igniting a fervent discussion on the nation's political future.

The political temperature in Kenya remains consistently high, fueled by ongoing economic hardships and pressing concerns over human rights. In this charged atmosphere, Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga recently stepped forward with a proposal for a "national conclave," envisioning collective civic engagement and reform as the pathway to address the country's multifaceted challenges. This call for dialogue, a familiar refrain in Kenya's political narrative, has, however, been met with a staunch and unequivocal dismissal from former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, igniting a crucial debate on the most effective route to national transformation.
Speaking to Kenyans residing in Seattle, Washington State, Gachagua minced no words in rejecting Odinga's overtures. His core argument is disarmingly simple, yet profound in its implications: "The dialogue we need is in the ballot box in 2027. Raila has been in every dialogue, but the problems of Kenya don't end. What we need is transformative leadership. It is time we persevere for two years and sort out this matter, once and for all." This statement encapsulates a political philosophy that prioritizes electoral accountability over boardroom negotiations as the primary driver of national change.
Gachagua's skepticism is rooted in a historical assessment of Odinga's political engagements. He contends that despite Odinga's repeated participation in national dialogues across various administrations, these talks have consistently failed to produce tangible, lasting solutions to Kenya's perennial problems. This critique frames Odinga's current proposal not as a genuine effort to solve national issues, but as a pattern of political opportunism.

The former Deputy President went further, accusing the ODM leader of a strategic maneuver to find his way into every administration through dialogue, only to subsequently distance himself when political situations turn "sour." Gachagua's remarks painted a picture of Odinga as a leader who desires governmental influence without shouldering responsibility: "Raila is totally irrelevant in the political discourse because every election cycle, he loses and finds his way into government. He wants to be in government but doesn't want responsibility. He is there, but somebody else takes the flak."
Gachagua's message to Kenyans is clear and uncompromising: the ultimate solution to address the current administration's perceived shortcomings and, if desired, to effect a change in leadership, lies solely in the 2027 General Election. He urged citizens to "persevere" for the remaining two years, viewing the upcoming electoral cycle as the definitive moment to "sort out this matter, once and for all." His distrust in the efficacy of dialogue with the current leadership was palpable, stating, "I don't think the Kenyan problem is talking to William Ruto. Even what you will agree will be a lie, so there's nothing we can discuss with him because it cannot work."
