The Kenyan political and social landscape is mourning the loss of a vibrant and often controversial figure. Mathew Lekidime Lempurkel, the former Member of Parliament for Laikipia North, has died at Kenyatta National Hospital, where he had been in the Intensive Care Unit for six days following a tragic road accident. The crash, which occurred in Ong'ata Rongai, has silenced a voice that was a fierce advocate for his community and a prominent face in the corridors of power.
Lempurkel, who served as MP from 2013 to 2017 on an ODM party ticket, was more than just a politician. He was known for his passionate advocacy for Maa rights, consistently fighting for the interests of his people. His commitment to social causes was also evident in his philanthropic work as the Executive Director of the Ndugu Zangu Christian Community Charitable Trust. Through this organization, he was instrumental in helping children with heart problems and supported various development projects in his community, leaving a legacy of service that extended far beyond his political office.

The news of his death comes at a poignant time. Just last November, Lempurkel had made a significant political move, switching his allegiance from ODM to the United Democratic Alliance (UDA). This shift signaled his intent to re-engage with active politics and perhaps to return to the national stage. His untimely death cuts short this new chapter and leaves a void in the political arena he was preparing to re-enter.
Lempurkel's political career was not without its challenges and controversies. In 2021, he was sentenced to one year in prison for a 2016 assault case involving the current Laikipia North MP, Sarah Korere. This incident, while a public setback, did not seem to deter his political ambitions, as evidenced by his recent move to UDA.
