Elizabeth Irungu is a name that now resonates in the corridors of finance and investment. She is the current CEO of ABSA Asset Management Limited.
Growing up in a humble household, Elizabeth was deeply influenced by her father who was an educator. Her faith in God too instilled in her a profound love for learning and this foundation paved the way for her academic achievements, leading her to one of Kenya's top public universities. Her initial dream was to study science but a twist of fate guided her toward economics—a field she embraced with both hands. She went ahead pursued the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation, becoming the third woman in Kenya to earn this prestigious title in 2008. There was an event thrown to honor her and she was recognized as "A Woman of Excellence,"
Elizabeth is a proclaimed perfectionist who believes in striving for excellence to avoid mediocracy. Within just a year at one of her jobs, she was promoted to Chief Investment Officer. However, it was her leap into the realm of development and client relations that truly tested her mettle. As someone who dealt with numbers, Elizabeth decided to face her fears and take a chance into the new field. In addition to the self-encouragement, she was inspired by the faith her boss had in her potential. Elizabeth told herself, “If someone else sees potential in me, why shouldn’t I?” This bold decision opened new doors, and five years later, she reflects on it as the best choice she could have made.
Elizabeth Irungu values integrity because she comes from a part of a community which values integrity and sees it as a huge role which made her to be this great. Today, th beacons hope is to aspire leaders, especially women in finance. She wishes to help women see the bigger picture in investing themselves other than spending here and there. She does this by balancing investing in other by investing in herself and making sure she has a book to read. Her advice to people is you need to step out of your comfort zone if you wish to achieve great heights!
