Drake has initiated legal action against Universal Music, alleging that the label artificially boosted streams of Kendrick Lamar’s diss track titled "Not Like Us." In documents filed in New York, Drake’s company, Frozen Moments LLC, accused Universal and the streaming service Spotify of participating in an illegal scheme involving bots, payola, and other methods to promote Lamar’s songs. Drake’s lawyers claimed that Universal Music "did not rely on chance." Instead, they argued, the company launched a campaign to manipulate and saturate the streaming services and airwaves. A spokesperson for Universal called the allegations "offensive and untrue," adding that "fans choose the music they want to hear." As of now, Spotify and Lamar have not responded to the claims. The petition filed is not a complete lawsuit, but rather a "pre-action petition," which allows Drake’s lawyers to request that the court order Universal and Spotify to preserve all relevant documents and information in anticipation of future legal action. The BBC understands that the primary focus of the action is on Universal, while Spotify is included in the belief that it may hold important information related to the lawsuit. "Not Like Us" was widely regarded as a pivotal moment in the escalating rap feud between Drake and Lamar earlier this year.
