DCI Summons Ndiangui Kinyagia: Was the Missing Blogger's Disappearance a "Staged" Act?

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has summoned blogger Ndiangui Kinyagia to record a statement, alleging his recent disappearance was a staged event designed to mislead the public and tarnish the National Police Service's image. This dramatic turn in a high-profile case sparks controversy, as police warn against faked abductions.

Missing blogger Ndiang'ui Kinyagia after he appeared in court on July 3, 2025.

Just days after his emotional reappearance in court, blogger Ndiangui Kinyagia finds himself at the center of a new and explosive controversy. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has officially summoned Kinyagia to record a statement, not as a victim of abduction, but under suspicion that his recent week-long disappearance was an alleged staged event. The DCI asserts that this purported act was intentionally designed to mislead the public and, critically, to tarnish the image of the National Police Service (NPS).
In a strongly worded statement released on Wednesday, July 3, 2025, the NPS directly addressed the uproar caused by Kinyagia's vanishing act. They noted that his disappearance had sparked widespread public outrage, leading many Kenyans to accuse the police of abduction. This public sentiment had fueled intense criticism against law enforcement agencies.

The National Police Service, in its press release, unequivocally reiterated its earlier position: "The Service reiterates its earlier response that Ndiang'ui Kinyagia was not in police custody." This firm denial sets the stage for their more pointed accusations. The statement then pivoted to express significant concern over what they describe as an "emerging trend" of individuals feigning abductions.
The NPS claims these acts involve providing false information to the police with a clear intent: "to generate a misleading narrative that exploits public outrage and sensational headlines, thereby distorting the truth rather than focusing on justice." This assertion paints a picture of deliberate manipulation, alleging that such actions are designed to unfairly damage the reputation of law enforcement.
"These criminal acts undermine the integrity of our law enforcement efforts, damage the reputation of the National Police Service, and cause anxiety to the public," the statement read in part, highlighting the perceived negative impact on police operations and public trust. The NPS went further, warning the public that faking abductions and issuing false reports are serious criminal offenses punishable by law. This stern caution serves as a deterrent against similar acts, should the DCI's allegations prove true in Kinyagia's case.
Despite the gravity of these accusations, the press release concluded with a direct appeal to the blogger. "Nonetheless, he remains a person of interest to the police and is hereby urged to present himself to the DCI Headquarters to record a statement," the NPS stated. This summons indicates that the DCI intends to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances of his disappearance, now viewed through the lens of potential deception.

This dramatic twist in the Ndiangui Kinyagia saga creates a complex narrative. While his family and legal team had previously stated he went into hiding fearing DCI officers over unspecified allegations, the police narrative now challenges this account, suggesting a deliberate fabrication.
