Forget just cement and sugar; Aliko Dangote, the undisputed king of African commerce, is diversifying his empire in a big way! The head honcho of Dangote Industries Limited (DIL) has just announced some seriously game-changing plans that could see Nigeria become a major player in global exports beyond oil. Get this: Dangote is gearing up to start shipping out coal within weeks! Yes, you heard that right. While the world talks about moving away from fossil fuels, Dangote sees an opportunity, adding another significant revenue stream to his already bulging portfolio.
Speaking with the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) in Lagos, Dangote dropped another financial bombshell: his company is aiming for a daily revenue stream of a staggering $6.5 million to $7 million from fertilizer exports within the next two years! That's some serious green (both literally and figuratively) for Nigeria.
"For some of you who have been to our Cement factory in Itori, we’re already exporting cement out of Nigeria. We have a whole factory of six million tons for cement export," Dangote stated, highlighting the existing export prowess of his conglomerate. But he wasn't done there. "In the next couple of weeks, we will start exporting coal out of Nigeria. Our fertiliser export will be almost like eight cargoes. The refinery operations will not export less than 25 million tons of various products."
Dangote has his sights set on achieving polypropylene independence for Nigeria. Currently, the nation imports a whopping 90% of its 250,000 metric tonnes of this key petrochemical product annually. Nigerian manufacturers are buzzing, estimating that Dangote’s new polypropylene production could save the country a staggering $267 million!
"We will also be exporting about 600,000 to 700,000 metric tons of polypropylene. So when you are talking about export, we are going to be very big," Dangote confidently declared. To put that into perspective, his company is already ramping up polypropylene bag production from 36 million to 52 million bags per month, with further increases on the horizon.
The engine behind the fertilizer export drive is DIL's massive granulated urea fertilizer complex, the largest of its kind in Africa. With an annual production capacity of 3 million metric tonnes, this facility has already been a game-changer for Nigeria's agricultural sector, reducing its reliance on costly imports. Now, it's poised to become a major foreign exchange earner, with plans to export around 16,000 tons of fertilizer daily within the next two years. Imagine the economic impact of that!

Through his Aliko Dangote Foundation (ADF), he's deeply involved in philanthropic work aimed at uplifting Nigerian communities. The ADF focuses on critical areas like improving nutrition, health, education, and economic empowerment. Initiatives like the National Food Intervention Programme have already delivered millions of bags of rice to vulnerable populations across various states, directly tackling food insecurity.
The ADF's impact spans several crucial areas:
Food Security: The Food Intervention Programme directly combats hunger and malnutrition by distributing essential food items to those in need.
Health and Wellness: The foundation actively supports health initiatives, including the fight against diseases like malaria and Ebola, and provides vital resources to healthcare facilities.
Education: Recognizing the power of knowledge, the ADF has invested in building schools and universities, fostering the next generation of Nigerian leaders.
Economic Empowerment: The ADF champions initiatives that empower individuals, particularly women, through micro-grant programs and vocational training, fostering sustainable economic growth.
Humanitarian Relief: In times of crisis, the ADF steps up to provide crucial aid and relief to communities affected by natural disasters and other emergencies.
Job Creation and Economic Growth: Dangote's vast business empire, including Dangote Cement and the soon-to-be-operational Dangote Refinery, are massive engines for job creation and overall economic stimulation in Nigeria.
Aliko Dangote isn't just building a business empire; he's actively contributing to the development and prosperity of his nation. His foray into coal and massive fertilizer exports, coupled with his philanthropic endeavors, paints a picture of a leader deeply invested in Nigeria's future.
