A horrible turn of events this week sees a passenger craft carrying 64 people collide with a US Army Black Hawk helicopter near Reagan National Airport outside Washington, DC. According to aviation officials around 19 airplanes were airborne during the tragic incident near national airport, necessitating their rerouting to another airport, Dulles International Airport. On Wednesday, 858 flights were planned to depart and arrive at Reagan National Airport, as reported by aviation analytics organization Cirium, with an additional 869 flights scheduled for Thursday.

According to CBS news, citing a police official, said that at least 18 bodies have been recorvered. In response to this fatal calamity, Reagan National Airport will remain shut until at least 11 a.m. ET on Thursday. DC’s Fire and EMS Chief John A. Donnelly Sr. reported that all current search-and-rescue operations are being focused in the water, where conditions are described as “hazardous.” He also noted that the challenges they are facing while extracting the passengers include access to the area, as the water is approximately 8 feet deep and complicated by wind and scattered ice, making the situation perilous. Additionally, the dark and murky water poses serious difficulties for divers attempting to carry out the search.
He advised that recovery efforts are predicted to take several days. He further resembled the river at night as a vast black void, which will complicates the search operations.

On Wednesday, the newly appointed Transportation Secretary, Sean Duffy, stated that he has instructed the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Department of Transportation (USDOT) to "provide extensive support" to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and other organizations involved in the response efforts.

"I have directed @USDOT and @FAANews to provide extensive support to the @NTSB and all responding agencies and authorities," Duffy shared in a post on X. He added, "I have spoken with Washington DC Mayor Bowser, Virginia Governor Youngkin, Kansas Governor Kelly, and NTSB Chair Homendy to offer our agency’s full assistance. A sincere thank you to all first responders actively involved in search and rescue operations."

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries took to social media to express his condolences regarding the "devastating and tragic" incident that occurred over the Potomac River. The New York Democrat shared his heartfelt hopes for the passengers, crew, servicemembers, and first responders involved. "Deeply saddened by the devastating and tragic crash at DCA. Sending heartfelt prayers for the passengers, crew, servicemembers, and first responders," he stated.

President Donald Trump stated early Thursday morning that the collision was a “poor circumstance that appears as though it could have been avoided.” On his Truth Social platform, Trump further wrote “The aircraft was on an ideal and standard approach to the airport. The helicopter was heading directly towards the airplane for a prolonged duration. It is a CLEAR NIGHT, the lights on the plane were shining brightly, why didn’t the helicopter ascend or descend, or change direction? Why didn’t the control tower instruct the helicopter on what to do instead of inquiring if they spotted the plane?”

“This is a poor circumstance that seems like it could have been avoided. NOT GOOD!!!” the president persisted.

In supoort to his employees, Robert Isom, American Airlines CEO says he’ll be heading to the crash’s site to asses the collision. A helpline has been set up at 1-800-679-8215 to help update and provide support for the friends and families who are not physically present at the scene.

According to Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority CEO Jack Potter there are counselors set up at a center at the airport to work with families of folks who were waiting to pick their loved ones at the airport.

A citywide prayer vigil is also scheduled for Thursday in Wichita, organized by the Kansas Aviation Museum. The event will begin at 12 p.m. CT in the Wichita City Council Chambers, inviting community members to come together in prayer and support. The message emphasized on unification with the afflicted, including the aviation community, as they await further updates.
