A public comment on social media has led to a major public apology from media personality Joyce Gituro, following a wave of criticism over her reaction to the dismissal of Munendi Mulandi, the Senior Pastor of Nairobi Baptist Church. The church had released an official statement on August 3rd, 2025, announcing that Mulandi was no longer serving in his role due to serious allegations of misconduct that were deemed "incompatible with the calling of a servant of Jesus Christ."
The church's statement, signed by the Elders Council, was clear and somber. It explained that after a review of Mulandi's actions, his ordination had been revoked. The council expressed its sadness, stating, “We sadly can no longer affirm that he is qualified to be a minister of the gospel of Jesus Christ.” The church also emphasized its commitment to justice and healing, stating its "foremost concern is the safety, dignity and well-being of the individuals directly impacted" and that an independent investigation was being initiated to understand the full scope of the matter.

Joyce Gituro commented on the church's announcement with the question, “So, why put it on social media? You're damaging a brother more!!” This comment was widely interpreted as an attempt to criticize the church for publicly shaming the pastor, seemingly ignoring the serious nature of the allegations and the church’s stated concern for the victims. Critics quickly took to her social media pages, accusing her of undermining victims' voices and showing misplaced sympathy for an individual accused of harmful acts.
In response to the mounting pressure, Gituro initially deleted her comment and restricted the comment sections on her posts, but the public demand for a proper explanation and apology only grew. Realizing the gravity of her misstep, Gituro issued a public apology, admitting that her initial reaction was uninformed and rushed. In her statement, she clarified that she had "assumed it was an internal disciplinary matter" and was not aware of the "full and serious nature of the pastor’s suspension." She stated, "Once I learned the truth, I deleted the post."
Gituro concluded her apology by firmly reaffirming her values as a mother and a Christian, stating, “I stand firmly against all forms of abuse, especially as a mother and a Christian. I stand against any form of abuse and also with the victims. I totally regret my fast reaction to that story.”
