A political storm is brewing in Nairobi as Governor Johnson Sakaja faces a potential impeachment. In a rare and powerful show of bipartisan unity, over 90 Members of County Assembly (MCAs) from both the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) have come together to voice their dissatisfaction with his leadership. By Sunday evening, 70 signatures had been collected out of the 123-member assembly, a move that signals a serious challenge to the governor's authority.
The grievances against Governor Sakaja are numerous and have been building for months. The MCAs have cited his failure to fulfill key campaign promises, persistent delays in disbursing bursaries to needy students, and the stalled Ward Development Fund as the primary reasons for their push to oust him. South B MCA Chege Waithera confirmed the unanimous resolution to impeach the governor, stating that he has lost the trust of the Assembly and has become out of touch with the needs of Nairobians. Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai also confirmed that nearly 70 signatures had been collected, bringing the motion closer to being formally tabled.
To officially table a motion of impeachment, at least 82 signatures are required. If the MCAs manage to secure the remaining signatures, the legal process will kick off. The motion will be debated in the County Assembly, and if it passes, it will be sent to the Senate for review. The unity of the MCAs, who are often divided along political lines, is a powerful indicator of the depth of their frustration with Sakaja’s leadership.
