Renowned artist Tems has officially joined the ownership group of MLS team San Diego FC through her innovative business, The Leading Vibe. This move makes her the first African woman to hold ownership in a Major League Soccer franchise and it proof to her commitment to expanding her influence beyond music.
Just after taking home the Grammy Award for Best African Music Performance at the 67th Grammy Awards, Tems adds this new venture to her impressive list of honors, which includes two Grammy Awards, a Billboard Women in Music Award, and multiple NAACP Image and BET Awards.
The Nigerian artist expressed her enthusiasm for this new venture, commenting, “I am thrilled to join San Diego FC’s ownership group and to be part of a club that celebrates creativity, culture, and the power of community. Football has a unique way of bringing people together, and I am excited to help build something special in San Diego, a city that thrives on diversity and innovation.”
The announcement was met with much excitement as San Diego FC prepares for its inaugural home match on March 1st. SDFC chairman Sir Mohamed Mansour praised Tems’s entry into the ownership group as he noted the influence of the Right to Dream organization, which lays the foundation for their initiatives, drawing inspiration from sub-Saharan Africa.
Tems has since joined a diverse ownership group that includes notable figures like actress Issa Rae, soccer star Juan Mata, and MLB player Manny Machado. She steps into a role that reinforces creativity, culture, and community. The club's vision aligns with her artistic ethos, aiming to forge connections that go hand in hand within the San Diego community and beyond.
