Tank and the Bangas, the funk/R&B/hip-hop/spoken word ensemble, have become synonymous with the vibrant energy of New Orleans. Their unique blend of genres and Tarriona "Tank" Ball's captivating stage presence have propelled them from local open mics to international recognition, culminating in a Grammy win and a coveted spot on the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival poster.
Tank's journey, however, began long before the bright lights and sold-out shows. Growing up in the 8th Ward on Music Street, she was immersed in the city's rich musical heritage. The bustling neighborhood, with its vibrant sounds and lively gatherings, instilled a deep appreciation for music within her. This early exposure, coupled with her family's musical tradition, provided the foundation for her artistic journey.
It wasn't music that initially captured Tank's heart. It was poetry. Inspired by her sisters' talent and the evocative power of words, she found her voice in writing, excelling in poetry even more than singing. This early passion for the written word would later become a defining element of Tank and the Bangas' unique sound.
Tank's love for her hometown, however, went beyond the music. She cherished the memories of her childhood in New Orleans East, particularly the now-defunct Jazzland amusement park. It was a place where she could escape with friends, ride the exhilarating Mega Zeph roller coaster, and experience the thrill of entrepreneurship by selling treats to earn season passes. These experiences, infused with childhood wonder and the exhilaration of a good ride, would later inspire the band's song "Rollercoasters," a powerful metaphor for the rollercoaster of love.
Tank's path to musical stardom was not a linear one. It involved navigating through the open mic scene, discovering her voice within the Poetry Group of New Orleans Team SNO, and finding inspiration in venues like Pass It On and Black Star Books & Caffè. It was during this time that she realized the potential to merge her love for poetry with music, creating a captivating blend that would define her artistic identity.
The birth of Tank and the Bangas marked a significant shift. The band's original name, Tarriona "Tank" Ball and the Black Star Bangas, was later shortened to Tank and the Bangas, a reflection of Tank's confidence and desire to create a more concise and impactful identity.
With their music, Tank and the Bangas have become ambassadors for New Orleans, sharing their infectious energy and unique sound with the world. Their ambition extended beyond the city limits, venturing out to explore new audiences and prove that their music had the power to resonate far beyond the familiar streets of their hometown.
From the vibrant streets of New Orleans to the global stage, Tank and the Bangas continue to captivate audiences with their energetic performances and soulful music. Their journey is a testament to the power of creativity, resilience, and the unwavering spirit of New Orleans.
