Alex Matata has become the talk of the town after he won the 18th Ras Al Khaimah Half Marathon. Held in the United Arab Emirates annually, the runners faced unusual cool temperatures and strong winds, which had an impact on the outcomes of both the men's and women's races.
The men’s race commenced on 1st February 2025, tightly packed with 20 runners who were all contending for the lead during the first 10 kilometers all clocking in at a steady 28 minutes and 34 seconds.
In a pink glove reminiscent of Michael Jackson, you could spot Matata was among them. “For wiping the sweat, that’s all,” he joked after the race, adding a touch of humor to how intense competition was. As the race progressed, however, Matata seized the moment when his main rival, Isaia Lasoi, began to struggle with a groin strain.
He picked up the pace at the 14-kilometer mark after he realized he had the strength to break away from the group. His determination saw him finishing the race in 59 minutes and 20 seconds, shattering his top score by 17 seconds. Meanwhile, Ethiopian runner Gemechu Dida surged ahead of Lasoi who was heading for second place, advanced before and came in second.
