A Safaricom customer scrolls through the *544# menu on her phone.

For many Safaricom subscribers, the persistent influx of data-related SMS notifications has become a daily annoyance. These ubiquitous pop-up messages, often received first thing in the morning, typically alert users that they have no active data bundle or that their existing bundle has been depleted. The frustration is compounded when these alerts appear even when the user is securely connected to Wi-Fi, or hasn't subscribed to any mobile data service in the first place. If you've been wondering why Safaricom seems to constantly interrupt your screen, the answer lies closer to home than you might think.
According to Safaricom itself, these seemingly intrusive and often ill-timed messages are not random. The telecommunications giant clarifies that the alerts are directly triggered by a specific device setting: your phone's Data Manager. This built-in feature, present on most smartphones, is designed with a specific purpose in mind: to prevent your airtime from being consumed for data usage once your subscribed data bundle has been exhausted. It acts as a protective mechanism, alerting you to the potential for out-of-bundle charges.
Safaricom explains, "This is your Data Manager at work. You can either disable your Data Manager or turn off Mobile Data while using WiFi. Please note that the phone will always intelligently select the strongest available connection." This highlights a key dynamic: modern smartphones are programmed to prioritize the strongest available internet connection. In scenarios where Wi-Fi signals fluctuate or become momentarily weak, your device might briefly, and intelligently, switch to mobile data to maintain a seamless connection. It is this momentary switch, even if quickly reverted to Wi-Fi, that prompts the system-generated "no data" notification from Safaricom.
The underlying intention of the Data Manager is, ironically, to save users from unexpected airtime deductions for data. However, for those constantly on Wi-Fi or intentionally not using mobile data, its constant alerts can become genuinely disruptive.
The good news is that Safaricom offers a straightforward solution for customers who wish to put an end to these persistent pop-up alerts. The recommended action is to disable a feature commonly known as 'Wi-Fi Assist' or its equivalent within your phone’s settings.
The specific steps to disable this feature vary slightly depending on your phone's operating system (OS) and model:
For iPhones: Navigate to Settings > Cellular/Mobile Data. Scroll down and locate Wi-Fi Assist and toggle it off.
For Android devices: The path can differ based on your Android OS version and phone manufacturer. Common paths include Settings > Connections > Wi-Fi > Advanced > Adaptive Wi-Fi (then disable it), or Settings > More > Link > Wi-Fi. Users may need to explore their Wi-Fi or Mobile Data settings for an option that allows the phone to automatically switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data for a seamless experience, and then disable that automatic switching.
By taking these simple steps to adjust your phone's Data Manager or Wi-Fi Assist settings, Safaricom subscribers can effectively regain control over their mobile experience, silencing those annoying pop-up messages and ensuring a smoother, less interrupted interaction with their devices. It's a quick fix that can significantly enhance daily digital convenience.
