The countdown to the African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 just got a major boost, as Kenya's iconic Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, has officially been handed over to the CHAN 2024 Local Organising Committee. This pivotal moment, overseen by Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya, marks the grand completion of major renovations, affirming Kenya's readiness to host a world-class football tournament.
Kasarani Stadium, a cornerstone of Kenyan sports infrastructure, had been closed to the public since August 2023 to undergo extensive upgrades. The ambitious renovation project was specifically designed to bring the facility up to the stringent standards set by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), ensuring that Kenya can provide a premier experience for teams and fans alike.

The transformation of Kasarani Stadium is nothing short of remarkable. The comprehensive renovation works have breathed new life into every corner of the arena. Key upgrades include:
New Seating: Installation of brand-new seats across all stands, ranging from comfortable regular seating to plush presidential boxes, ensuring optimal viewing for all spectators.
Modern Changing Rooms: State-of-the-art changing rooms, designed to meet the needs of professional athletes, offering enhanced comfort and functionality.
Improved Drainage System: A revamped drainage system to ensure optimal pitch conditions, minimizing disruptions due to adverse weather.
Enhanced Turnstiles: Modern turnstiles implemented for efficient and secure entry and exit, streamlining spectator flow.
Artificial Turf on Running Track: The running track surrounding the pitch has been fitted with artificial turf, providing a temporary, high-quality surface. A brand-new tartan track, built to international athletic standards, is slated for installation immediately after the CHAN 2024 tournament concludes.
The full scope of this ambitious upgrade, which also encompasses the Kasarani Annex and Annex B training grounds, represents a significant investment of Ksh6.7 billion. This substantial financial commitment underscores Kenya's dedication to improving its sports infrastructure and cementing its position as a regional sporting hub.
With its revitalized facilities, Kasarani Stadium is set to play a central role in the upcoming CHAN 2024 tournament. The stadium will be the exclusive venue for all of Kenya’s Group A matches, ensuring the home team plays on a familiar and top-tier pitch. Furthermore, it will host the first quarterfinal match, adding to the excitement. The pinnacle of the tournament, the CHAN 2024 final on August 30, will also unfold on the hallowed grounds of Kasarani, promising a grand spectacle. Beyond the matches, the stadium will serve as the primary base for the Harambee Stars throughout the tournament, providing them with world-class facilities for training and preparation.
