Kenya's Ministry of Health has confirmed a total of "314 cases and five deaths" from the Mpox disease since the outbreak began in "July 2024." The figures, released by Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale, reveal a nationwide spread, with cases now reported across "22 counties." The disease, also known as Monkeypox, has had a significant impact on several regions, most notably along key transportation corridors.
The geographical distribution of the outbreak shows a clear concentration in specific areas. Mombasa County has been the hardest hit, with "146" confirmed cases, a number that has since risen to "149" with the addition of three new cases in the last 24 hours. Busia County follows with "63 cases," while Nakuru, Kilifi, and Nairobi have also reported significant numbers. The outbreak has touched a wide array of counties, with locations as diverse as Kiambu, Kericho, and Migori all reporting cases. Of the 314 confirmed cases, "33 of them have been admitted to various facilities" while "54 cases are under home based care and isolation," highlighting the serious nature of the illness for a portion of those infected.

The official data paints a stark picture of the outbreak's severity, revealing a positivity rate of "34.6%" from the "905 samples tested at the National Public Health Laboratories." The fatality rate currently stands at "1.6%," with "222 cases" having fortunately made a full recovery. The Ministry of Health's response has been both swift and comprehensive. In a concerted effort, "Multidisciplinary Rapid Response Teams (RRTs) have been deployed nationwide to strengthen healthcare capacity" and manage cases. The Ministry has also successfully "traced 422 contacts of confirmed cases," with "392 under active monitoring for the recommended 21-day observation period." This proactive approach has identified "15 contacts" who also tested positive for Mpox.
A major focus has been on public awareness and prevention. According to Duale, "risk communication and community engagement activities are undergoing" in the affected counties, with "over 2 million individuals...sensitized on Mpox at various points of entry." The Ministry has also issued advisories urging the public to take precautionary measures. These include "avoiding contact with infected persons," using personal protective equipment, refraining from sharing personal items, and practicing "good personal hygiene" and "safe sex." The public is strongly encouraged to "report symptoms or suspected cases promptly to the nearest healthcare facility," while those who suspect they are infected are urged to "self-isolate and seek prompt medical evaluation."
