“The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that people forget failure and success…. or that success and failure isn’t really a thing — it’s an illusion,” said Jon Batiste during his conversation with students in a weekend visit to Brown.
Jon Batiste was hosted by the Brown Arts Institute and his visit kicked off with a magical concert at the Lindemann Performing Arts Center. Around 400 lucky attendees enjoyed enchanting 90-minute performance. The stage was flooded in warm orange light, Batiste expressed his love for the audience; to those he does or doesn’t know them. He even went ahead and signed “I love you” in American Sign Language.
The concert opened with a powerful mashup of his song “Master Power” and a track from Beyoncé’s album, “AMERIICAN REQUIEM” presenting Batiste’s wide plus ever lively creativity. The energy came to a climax when he and his drummer engaged in an exhilarating improvisation.
On Sunday, Batiste participated in a master class with students, followed by a public conversation with his wife, author Suleika Jaouad. The Assistant Professor, Lisa Biggs preceded a screening of the documentary film, “American Symphony.”
Batiste showed appreciation for Brown University's eclectic approach to learning. He urged students to explore the humanities and offered guidance how to communicate with a band, painting it as the secret sauce for their artistic endeavors. Moreover, Batiste dropped a golden nugget for faculty: never forget to sprinkle in some self-care lessons. After all, what’s a rockstar without a little TLC (tender love and care)?
