A lighthearted exchange unfolded at State House, Nairobi, on Wednesday during President Yoweri Museveni's official visit to Kenya. The unexpected moment occurred during a joint address following closed-door bilateral meetings, providing a captivating glimpse into the personal rapport between President Museveni and his host, President William Ruto.
The amusement began when President Museveni, while addressing the audience, attempted to quote a passage he believed was from the Bible. He paraphrased the words, saying, “They left undone what they ought to have done and they did that which they ought not to have done and there is no truth in them.” As he sought to verify the source of the words, President Ruto stepped in to assist, clarifying that they were indeed from the Bible. It was at this point that the Ugandan President, in a playful jab that delighted the room, referred to his Kenyan counterpart as a spiritual leader. “It's in the bible also. The Bishop has told you,” he said, prompting a cascade of laughter from the officials present.

This seemingly simple moment held a deeper significance. Museveni had been using the words to comment on "how the current generation of young people operates," connecting a biblical lesson to contemporary societal concerns. The actual verse from which the quote was drawn, "Matthew 23:23," speaks to the importance of "justice, mercy and faithfulness," underscoring how deeply faith informs the political and social commentary of both leaders.
President Ruto, embracing the moment with good humor, took the opportunity to clarify his own spiritual aspirations. In a candid response, he "clarified that he is not a Bishop but has committed to that when he retires from the presidency, he will become an Evangelist.” This statement offered a rare peek into his personal long-term plans, revealing a future that extends beyond the realm of political power.
The mutual respect and shared foundation of faith were further highlighted by President Ruto, who "commended Museveni for his strong Christian upbringing." He shared a personal anecdote from a previous visit to Uganda, recalling, “I know that you have a serious grounding as a Christian. I came to see you and you prayed for food in Kinyankole I asked why and you said that is how you were taught when you were young.”
